Have dog, must travel – safely!
I ordered the 2 pack Vastar adjustable dog seat belt a couple of months ago, and am still happily using it nearly every day! As a longtime dog parent AND pet care professional who often has other people’s precious babies in my vehicle as well, I don’t let dogs ride without a seatbelt (or other legitimate safety restraint) and strongly recommend these from Vastar. Here’s why I love it, in short:• unbelievable value for price – at this price, especially for two, you CAN afford to keep your dog safe!• stands up to a well-known, major “adventure” and travel brand for dogs in quality (IMO).• seriously, the materials are excellent quality! Nylon is sturdy but not stiff, stitching material is also high-quality and well-made, neither show any signs of wear after frequent use with multiple dogs (in a big variety of sizes), use with a cattle dog (heeler) and Aussie mix puppy most often, and a few washes. Hardware rounds out the trifecta of high-quality materials on a well-made product, no sign of wear here, let alone damage.• THOUGHTFUL DESIGN FOR REAL-LIFE USE! Compatibility, ease of use, and security. – COMPATIBILITY: Unlike other dog seat belts in the same price range I’ve bought over the years, I’ve been able to use it in about 8 different vehicles ranging from trucks and suvs to sedans and imported performance vehicles and in vehicles made from 1992 to 2023. It worked in a 2002 Ford F-150 AND a 2023 M3 series BMW, I’m impressed. – EASE OF USE, SECURITY: The clasp isn’t just a 360 swivel, it’s a trigger clasp, AND the size is neither so large nor so small as to make it a challenge to fit myriad harness sizes and styles. This design is the easiest and quickest to use (while still being secure, anyway!) in all the situations you might run into in real-life use of a dog seat belt: moving dog, one-handed use, in a rush, can’t see where you’re clipping it well, dog applying pressure while releasing clasp, and when you’re not in a good position for clipping/unclipping. All of this is important if you DO end up in an accident with your dog, none of it compromises the clasp’s security when attached. Unlike traditional clips, opening it without using a human thumb is very hard, as is the clip getting wedged into the harness ring. There’s a reason why this clip style is one of two I’ll only accept in my dog grooming products!• Oh, SO, adjustable! 19.7″ – 32.3″ in total length is seriously adjustable. Not only was this useful with a still growing puppy that had a mystery parent, thus, I wasn’t sure of his adult size and shape yet, it makes the Vastar dog seat belt so easy to use with multiple dogs and in multiple vehicles (as well as positions IN those vehicles). Have used with dogs as small as 5lb puppies and Yorkshire terrier mixes and as large as a nearly 100lb German shepherd and American pit bull terrier cross. One size doesn’t fit all without being adjustable when it comes to dogs, and the same is true of where your dog is sitting in the vehicle and the vehicle itself. -I can easily and quickly (even one-handed in a couple of situations) adjust this seat belt to keep my dog securely in the backseat of one car, unable to slide or fall off the seat while still having room to move normally and comfortably, then, adjust it later to keep him on the single bench seat of a truck, and from impacting the dash if we had a wreck, while giving him the same range of comfort. No need to have multiple dog seat belts around like I used to! This has adjusted to keep my dog son safe AND comfortable through his last growth spurt, works great for our vehicle hopping frequency, and I’ve been able to quickly accommodate both my grooming dogs that I transport and pet sitting dogs during longer overnight stays. I needed to replace my old one anyway, but one Vastar seat belt does what I needed up to three stowed away to do before.• SAFE DESIGN, NOT MARKETING! Especially in this price range, you’ll primarily find dog seat belts with a “bungee” feature. *** I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT USE BUNGEE DOG SEAT BELTS!! There is a reason why YOUR seat belt is not designed this way, folks, it is categorically unsafe. That style might be better than absolutely nothing securing your pet, but it’s a big “might.” It will leave your pet able to impact seats, the dash, other passengers and objects in the vehicle, the windshield, windows, doors, etc., and that’s just part of the disaster. Please, imagine typical whiplash from a wreck, then imagine yourself as a dog attached to a bungee cord during a wreck. That is a very dangerous design, if pet products had more regulation, it would never be allowed!ONLY CHOOSE SOLID-STYLE SEAT BELTS FOR YOUR DOG, LIKE THIS ONE FROM VASTAR! The objective is the same as with your own seat belt: to keep your dog from impacting anything in the car, being thrown from the car, and to minimize being jerked about as much as possible. This sturdy product is designed to do that when used properly. Some further information:My dog is definitely the most frequent user of my Vastar adjustable dog sat belt. He’s currently 7 months old and weighs 23lbs. Tater is a miniature “Texas Heeler” mix. Texas Heelers are a purpose-bred sort of designer ranch dog, a mixure of Australian Shepherd and Australian Cattle Dog (heeler, blue heeler, red heeler etc.) typically used in working cattle. Mini versions are combos of mini Aussies and mini ACDs, most are still working dogs, but people who both like to suffer and who have odd identity issues with smaller sized companion dogs also get them as pets. Tater’s mom was the mini TX Heeler, his dad is unknown, but on a working cattle ranch in a rural area mostly comprised of cattle ranches and puppy mills, he’s most likely more smaller sized herding dog or even a more typical “designer breed” trending right now, like a “Pomsky.” He looks like a coyote and a dingo had a one-night stand (sounds like it too!), to give an idea of his general size and shape. Way more heeler than Aussie shape!Though we started car riding manners right away, he was still doing some teething when I got these seat belts, and as a heeler mix with largely heeler behavior, he tends to just…bite things. People call them Redneck Malinois and it’s applicable lol So, I’m saying that he totally has bitten this seat belt! And, that he is a pretty active little man. Far from the most active, and being intelligent + early work that’s all positive training, he’s been extremely good in the car from early on. Not light wear, but not the heaviest either, no dogs have gone ham on the seat belts so far, but plenty of wiggling, flopping, pulling, and so on.I’ve washed Tater’s usual one by hand twice and machine-washed it about three or four times as well. I used one of those laundry bags for shoes and fancy underpants and whatnot, washing it with my dog grooming towels to further buffer it from knocking around in the washer and dryer. Washed on cold, soak, dried on low heat gentle setting. Used Sheets Laundry Club detergent sheets, Lysol laundry additive, and fabric softener since other things were in there as well. Have only washed the other once after a particularly stinky grooming pal used it. Neither the black nor the green lost or shared color. They’ve both been left in vehicles in the summer in a harsh environment, mostly without garage or sunshades, like, the UV index here is 9-10 that time of year and you can get severe burns from your car interior.Used with VERY LARGE Aussie with pretty serious anxiety issues, there was a lot of tugging on it when getting out of the car, movement in the car, and overstimulated slobbering. So, you have a better impression of the life they’ve lived, I’ll now reiterate: they seriously look like I just pulled them out of the package today! No sign of being used aside from the scent of the fabric softener, no wear, absolutely no damage!CAVEATS & CONSIDERATIONS:• I know that the product page claims it is “chew-proof.” In my experience with it, that’s been true. HOWEVER, unless it’s made of titanium or something, never assume that any product is literally chew-proof. While it is impressively well constructed with excellent materials, and I feel that most dogs under appropriate supervision would be unable to destroy it, let alone chew totally through it, I am also confident that a dog with the chewing power, dedication, and unsupervised time to do so COULD damage it through chewing.Like anything else, do not leave your dog unattended and assume it the thing is impervious. If your dog has separation anxiety or general anxiety, is easily bored, or teething, they should not be left unsupervised in your vehicle anyway. It is generally a bad idea to leave your dog in your car, even with climate control, locked doors, and protection from the sun anyway. Please, work with your canine family member to safely and calmly (reasonably!) enjoy car rides by teaching them good car manners! It’s safer and more fun for everyone.• This seat belt has worked with all dogs I’ve used it with, but the fit wasn’t perfect for very large, especially very large and long-bondied buddies. It worked, but the dog could’ve been more comfortable. If he’d laid down, it would’ve worked out better, but he likes to sit like a person and look out the windows, reasonably!-For XL+ sized dogs, especially if they’re not into just lying down the majority of the time, please seek a restraint specifically for XL and up sized companions, use a vehicle approved crate that is secured from being tossed about in an accident, etc.• Seat belts for your dog are also great for keeping them from being a distraction, hopping back and forth from front to back seats, getting under your feet and on your lap! This also helps you to train them to ride politely, and many dogs feel more secure when buckled in – they can’t slide off of a seat and most learn to use the belt to stabilize themselves better, too. BUT YOU WANT THEM TO BE SAFE! Please, ensure your dog doesn’t have enough length to still impact something in a crash or to be thrown forward and jerked back drastically. For additional safety, turn off airbags where your dog will be in the vehicle, try to use the backseat instead of passenger seat.• HARNESS USE ONLY! A crash-tested harness meant just for car safety is optimal, but pricey. Using a properly fitting harness that doesn’t put pressure the dog’s neck or squeeze shoulders together like some no-pull styles is the best alternative! Never, absolutely never, use a seat belt or other such device with a collar. Collars are good for ID purposes, not anything that can put pressure on the neck. In a wreck, your dog is very likely to sustain life-threatening or fatal injuries to their trachea if this is attached to a collar! Even if not fatal, this is life-long damage that you do not want to subject your beloved baby to!• FOR EXTRA WIGGLY AND SPINNING DOGS, tangling around legs is highly likely and can result injuries even without a wreck. Please, try going back to teaching more appropriate, calm car manners, explore options to stimulate your dog’s mind and relieve overstimulation and anxiety before car rides. While working on this, use an appropriate, safe, and secured kennel for real car rides to keep them safe.ADDED BENEFITS:While the swivel clips isn’t going to prevent your dog from potentially tangling legs and such, it’s much easier on YOU to clip and unclip them! The design of the clip and quality material used seems to have a HUGE PERK FOR LONGHAIRED DOGS, too! Unlike all other clip designs on dog seat belts I’ve tried, I have not had one incident of hair tangling up in and/or around the clip. I’ve also not had matting/knots created by it’s use. Having Pomeranians for over 20 years prior to my little dingo-yote baby, transporting many breeds like border collies, Aussies, Yorkies, Maltese, and many more, and being a dog groomer forever…I feel like this is a great, unexpected perk! If you have a dog with these kinds of coats, you likely know that nearly everything designed for their safety and comfort tends to pull on, pull out, tear up, and tangle their coats. It’s uncool! It’s painful for the dog, means you have to do even more at-home upkeep, and you might even create a negative experience for your baby with every ride…just by trying to keep them safe. The finish on the clasp and other hardware is VERY smooth and I’ve not had any scratches or nicks on mine yet. Exercise caution not to pull fur, of course, but this finish is very smooth and has simply glided through fur, even badly damaged and matted fur, as far as my experience has gone.-So, long-haired dog parents, take notice!!LASTLY…Thank you for looking into any vehicle safety for your dog, I hope you’ll take advantage of the shocking value for the price with the Vastar two pack of dog seat belts! Your dog is family, but many people don’t take the danger seriously until it’s too late. I know that I didn’t until my first Pomeranian sailed from the back seat of my car into my dash. Though he was, miraculously, alright save for biting his tongue, it could have been yet another tragedy.Don’t count on being lucky or your vehicle insurance carrier covering veterinary costs, no matter what they claim. MANY factors stand in the way of you actually receiving that help, like state laws, who is at fault, the length it takes to reimburse your costs (even if you could pay upfront for that much emergency care), hit-and-runs, and uninsured motorists. All in all, it’s unlikely your dog will benefit from this, and if they’ve sustained fatal injuries from not being properly secured, they won’t even make it to a vet. Would your vet, let alone an emergency clinic, accept delayed payment? It could take months to years before your claim is settled, with no promise that it will be in your favor or enough money to cover these costs. Additionally, the law is, simply, NOT in your favor as a pet parent, not even by trying to litigate over property damage, your dog being legally considered property.Remember, you are your dog’s guardian and advocate! It’s up to you to keep them as safe as you possibly can, and the best safety is preventing disaster as much as you can.FOR UNDER $8, YOU CAN HELP PREVENT A HORRIBLE SITUATION WITH NOT ONE, BUT TWO, INCREDIBLY WELL-MADE VASTAR PET SEAT BELTS! You won’t regret it, add these colorful miracles to that cart right now, dog mom or dad! Tater and I think it’s very worth it!

UPDATED REVIEW – Vastar went above and beyond with their customer service!
Updated 1/31/18: I had originally purchased these seat belts in 2016, and they were a literal lifesaver for my dog. My car was totaled when a car going 45mph in the opposite direction crossed lanes and hit us. My dog was wearing her seatbelt and the police and EMTs were shocked that she was ok and didn’t fly through the windshield on impact. They could barely get my door open and I went to the hospital, but my dog was injury free. I just purchased a new set for my new car, and I would recommend these without question to any dog owner!I got these for my dog for quick trips around town — she has the bad habit of wanting to jump into the front seat with whoever is sitting there – and since she’s 50 lbs, it doesn’t really work out.I bought these based on the price, but what has really blown me away is Vastar’s customer service — they completely went above and beyond, and I would not hesitate to do business with them again.I got these seat belts a day before expected to arrive, in a soft envelope, so they fit in our mailbox. I was surprised by the speedy shipping!Unfortunately, having not been restrained at all in the car, my dog did NOT like them and managed to chew both of them apart. I was upset, but figured I spent less than $10, so it was no big deal. I managed to tie two of the ends together (I was surprised they held up in a knot), and used it as a makeshift seatbelt until I could get new ones.About a week after my purchase, Vastar had emailed me asking about how I liked the product, and if I had any questions. I told them that I was unfortunately unable to really use them, since my dog had destroyed them within the first few days.I was super impressed that Vastar worked with me to send a replacement belt immediately. They said they wanted me to be satisfied with my purchase, and sent me a new one, with a shipping confirmation. Not only did I receive the new belt in 2 days (it even arrived on a Sunday!), but they sent a 2-pack, rather than just one.My dog is now used to wearing her seat belt, and I have had zero issues with the replacements. The fact that they went totally above and beyond makes me so glad I purchased these, and will continue buying products from them in the future!
