Fantastic folding stairs for dog to enter back of vehicle.
I have an older German Shepherd that cannot jump any more. These steps make it easy for her to safely access the back of my Highlander with no problem. They fold up easily and stay up until you release them. They are sturdy and just the right height. They attach to a trailer hitch, which is inexpensive to install if you don’t already have one.

    FANTASTIC – Pic Explained Below
AMAZING! I will explain the picture below. To start, I want to say we LOVE this! We have two 100+lb dogs and a lifted jeep wrangler plus my husband is a disabled veteran so he cannot lift our dogs into the Jeep regularly. It was too much for me to do on my own so we decided to try a variety of ramps and steps to help our dogs get into our vehicle. This is the 5th one we have tried and it is PERFECT. It was so easy to teach the dogs to use and is very easy for us. Now, if you are questioning the quality, please see the picture I have attached. We were stopped at a red light and someone rear ended us going around 35-40mph. The bottom bracket of the step bent back but that was it! No damage to our vehicle, our hitch, and no damage to the other pieces of the steps. It is constructed of high quality metal and sustained limited damage considering the hit it took! We are actually still using it with just one step for now while we wait for the insurance company to provide the funds for a new one! I would recommend this to anyone.

    Jeep owners beware
It’s a good product but does NOT fold up with the steps inserted if you use it in a Jeep Wrangler with a spare tire. It does fold without the steps making it a little inconvenient for traveling.

    Excellent Product & Customer Service
A good friend recommended the Petsafe Happy Ride Dog Hitch Step because my 11 yo German shepherd mix has been working with a canine physical therapist for significant weakness in her back legs. Although PT is helping, getting my girl in and out of my SUV has been difficult for both of us. I was excited when the hitch step arrived at my door 2 days of placing the order, but when I opened the package the bottom step did not have any slip-proof material on it, thus making it too unsafe for us to use. I called Petsafe customer service immediately and they said they would replace the step after I sent them an email w/my Amazon invoice, which I did the same day. Today (two days after speaking to customer service) I received the replacement package, and much to my surprise, I received a brand new dog hitch step with all of the parts and pieces! This product is well made, easy to assemble, very sturdy in the hitch, and worked very well to get my girl to and from her PT appointment this evening! I would highly recommend this product! I am also very grateful for the excellent support and customer service provided by Petsafe!

Steps wobble too much & NOT for an FJ Cruiser & too loose
It is durable and easy to assemble. However for an FJ Cruiser it really needs a 3rd step. The distance from getting in the FJ from the top step is way too far, my lab would not attempt it. He had to step on the FJs bumper which is too slippery. Even w the steps at the ToP position and then the main post is way to high (in the way). It also moves way too much, the steps themselves rock side to side, my dog did NOT like that. Going up and down, dog dis-approved. And this is from a 9month old puppy, not an older dog. We tried treats and the steps having so much movement, amd gave him plenty of time/encouragement, nope. The wobbly steps and the distance at the top, all caused this to be a pricey fail. I had to buy a new towing hitch to make this ALL work, only to have it fail for my dog :(. Save your money and buy a set of those ugly plastic stair cases. They are solid.

Easy To Assemble & Work Well, But Sandpaper Surface Pulls Out Tufts Of Hair From Long-Haired Breeds
I only rated these with 3 starts because of the sandpaper surface of these steps. I appreciate the need for a non-skid surface, but my Sheltie loses little tufts of hair every time he climbs down from the SUV. There are better ways to provide a non-skid surface, but I couldn’t find steps that were the correct height, folded up when not in use, *and* had a non-sandpaper surface. So these steps had 2 out of 3 of my requirements.I do like that these steps fold up when not in use. I bought these to replace a single-step plastic trailer-hitch step that really tore up a guy’s rear bumper/fender when we had one of those no-fault parking lot backing-into-each-other accidents. The good news was that my car had no damage at all, just a small tear in the plastic step. These steps would probably also protect my rear bumper from damage, but don’t stick out as far when folded up. (You have no choice but to fold them up when driving, as the lower step is SO low it would scrape on every little bump or when going in and out of parking lots.)They are VERY HEAVY (the shipping box has a big red “HEAVY” label on it), but easy to assemble. They aren’t as stable as I’d like (there’s quite a bit of wobble room), but they stay still enough so that my ultra-timid Sheltie will use them. I also like that there are two horizontal positions for each step (one moves the step closer to the vehicle’s bumper, the other allows the step to be slid further away from the bumper). This helps with dogs who have different gaits and need more or less space between the steps. And it’s a simple procedure to change step position: just pull out on the red knob, slide the step forward or backward, then release the knob and wiggle the step to make sure it’s locked in place.

This is exactly the genius invention that I have needed! My 100 pound dog is aging and will no longer attempt to jump in the SUV. I needed a way to get him to the vet and groomers without having to lift him myself and he was scared of the ramp. These steps are just what I needed. I’m 8.5 months pregnant, limping from a knee injury and I was still able to put the steps on myself, load up the dog, fold up the steps and get him to the vet myself. No problems, no hassle.Putting the steps together at first requires a bit of jimmying to get them to the height you want and figure out how the pins work, but once that is done they are simple to stow up, remove just the steps, or take the system off altogether. My dog can be pretty stubborn at times and it only took him a few minutes of training to get comfortable using them. I found watching the video another reviewer posted helpful. If you are looking for a way to get small or aging dogs in a vehicle, or to just to ease the strain on your dog’s joints, don’t hesitate to purchase these. You won’t regret it.

Pros:First let me say that I looked at alot of different options to help our 120lb girl get in and out of the car easily. Ramps weren’t a great option for us because as soon as you open the back she gets super excited and wants to jump out immediately. I looked at sturdy folding pet stairs and we’d run into the same problem (she won’t give you time to get it set up once the hatch opens and then how do I hold on to her leash while I’m trying to put all the stuff away in the car). Given the situation, storage outside the vehicle is ideal since she also takes up a large part of the rear cargo area. So this PupStep was really looking like a clear winner for our situation from a design standpoint………it is, just with a few caveats.Cons: It’s very easy to assemble and well thought out so no issues there. One main problem I ran into is that the steps are not as solid as I’d like. They fit quite loosely into their slots and so they can feel unstable to a dog. Now you could use shims on the sides of the tubes to take out the slack but you’re supposed to slide the second step down while driving to allow visibility of your license plate. You could also use some sort of lever or cam clamp to take out the slack. The simple fix to me would be that instead of (or in addition to) pull pins they would also use heavy duty thumb screws so you could remove all the slack from the fit between the tubes. The biggest issue by far to me is that the second step is too low and far away from the edge of the car bumper if you have a low hitch (like most current wagons and small SUVs). If you look at the photos all the hitches the manufacturer shows they typically come right out the center of the bumper but on most modern vehicles the hitch mounts under the bumper (because nobody wants to cut their nice paint matched bumper for a tow hitch). This means that the first step is closer to the ground and the distance between the second step and the cargo area is much larger than you’d like (the dog will tend to have their hind legs drop in betwen the step and the bumper because it expects a stair to be there). I saw one review where someone fabricated a custom 3rd step to the top of the main post and to me this is likely how I will fix mine as well in the short term. Ideally the manufacturer really should provide something like this in their assembly (or at least allow folks to buy it as an option). I’d suggest they add a removable 3rd step that slides into the main tube and attaches with a similar red pull pin. A removable top cap should be standard so it still looks good even if you don’t need the 3rd stair. This problem clearly affects most of the new cars on the market today so the manufacturer really needs to address this in their design IMHO.If they fixed those 2 issues it would be a 5 star item for me.

Very easy to install on the hitch of my suv. Once my dog got the hang of it, no problems. It is so much less stress getting her in & out of the vehicle now.

A couple of our previous dogs had to have expensive leg surgery, partly due to jumping in and out of today’s elevated SUV cargo areas. This step avoids this trauma.A word of caution. We had to temporarily shut down the parking sensors on the vehicle as the step would interfere with their operation. I drove for over 50 years without these aids so shutting them down once and awhile is not an issue. Removing the step only takes a couple of minutes. All in all a great product that I would purchase again in an instant.
