What makes Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health different from other dog foods?
Dr. Harvey’s is nutrition you can see and smell! We use only real, whole food ingredients, with no preservatives, fillers, or artificial anything. Dr. Harvey’s allows you to feed your dog a whole food, nutritious homemade meal quickly & easily.
Do dogs really eat vegetables?
A balanced diet including both high-quality protein & nutrient-rich vegetables is important to support your dog’s overall health. Canine Health has a full range of nutritious ingredients, including 9 nutritious vegetables & 6 organic grains.
Does Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health contain meat?
Canine Health is a base mix, which means you must add your own meat. Many dog owners love this option, as it allows control over the type & quality of meat their dog eats. If you’d like an option with meat included, try our line of Complete Foods!
Do I need to cook the meat that I add to Canine Health?
You certainly can! Or you can feed the meat raw. That’s up to your personal preference. We’re sure your dog will love it either way.
But kibble is so easy. Why should I switch to a whole food option like Canine Health?
We would never recommend feeding a child dry, processed cereal every meal for the rest of their life, and it’s the same with your dog. Kibble is high heat processed, full of fillers & preservatives. Canine Health is feeding the way nature intended.

Determined to give the best quality of life (kidney & liver disease)
TLDR:Dog has liver & kidney disease.I am using this, a renal diet, immunity boosting mushrooms, milk thistle and goats milk w/probiotics.Day 1 he loved it, will update.I intend to follow up with this review as time goes on. He has a follow up vet appointment in a few weeks where I will request another blood sample to be taken and I will share the results. Background:I have a 14 year old Shih Tzu named Diesel. 14 pounds. He has been my rock and support system for all these years, best believe in his golden years I’m going to give him the best quality of life and love I can afford. He had been picky about eating, chewing/gnawing on treats, had an occasional cough/hack and random bouts of vomiting. The vet diagnosed him with a small heart murmur and his lab work showed signs of stage 2 kidney failure and liver disease. The vet recommended I change his food and provide him supplements. Science diet/KD didn’t feel like a good choice to me.I did some research on his lab work (included photo) and scoured all available resources to better understand his complications. I’m NOT a vet and neither is the internet, but after hours of reading research papers and random commercial websites to understand what was going on I found Dogaware.com a thorough and easy to read resource on both kidney and liver disease. I highly recommend you give it a reading if your fur babe has the same issues.Basically, “the goal is to reduce phosphorus by feeding moderate to high fat, moderate amounts of high quality protein, and low phosphorus carbohydrates to provide calories…fed several small meals throughout the day rather than just one or two large meals.”I looked at all the top rated at-home treatments for his condition and found that certain mushrooms were the main ingredient and milk thistle. I then searched for what foods are recommended for a liver and kidney cleansing/healing diet.I found this dog food and was impressed with great reviews on both Chewy and Amazon. Many of the reviews spoke of it improving their dogs kidney and liver disease issues, let’s give it a shot!I have paired it with goats milk containing pre&probiotics, an organic mushroom blend (ideally for the turkey tail and cordyceps), milk thistle and bene-bac plus probiotic (for an occasional boost). This food is meant as a base, meaning YOU HAVE TO ADD PROTEIN!! So on the side I have prepared ground chicken in coconut oil paired with recommended vegetables (i.e. sweet potato, carrots, peas, green beans, kale, pumpkin, asparagus). *note* if you can get green Tripe it’s supposed to be really good for them).BASICALLY MY PRINCE IS EATING BETTER THAN ME LOL1st review 6/26/2020:Opening the food I was very impressed, it just looks “healthy.” I also like that it has ground egg shell included for calcium and it balances out phosphorus. I added one scoop with hot water and let it soak. After a few minutes I mixed in the ground chicken-veggie mix I had prepared, a tiny bit of mushroom powder, his first 1/2 dose of bene-bac plus and the goats milk. (The milk thistle will be delivered in two days).Honestly, I wasn’t prepared for his reaction. He’s usually a bit picky and will stare me down if he doesn’t like it. He chowed it down with no hesitation!!!Only time will tell if this will be a component to his recovery, but I look forward to utilizing this as the foundation to his success. Please note: I know there’s a kidney supplement Dr. Harvey offers, but it had limited reviews and my intuition felt it would be best to stick with the mushrooms and milk thistle which I know are key components to many of the elixirs offered.July 24th update:TLDR: Dog is happy, energetic and fur looks great.I haven’t had a chance to go back to my vet yet for lab work, hopefully soon. However, He must have been feeling sick before because within a week of his new diet he was more energetic, playful and would actually go on walks whereas before I practically had to drag him out. Also, his breath smells WAY better, his fur is looking thicker and shinier, he has an appetite now and has gained a 1.5 lbs or so.I have been meal prepping for the week. I prepare and store the meat cooked in coconut or salmon oil and Dr Harvey’s mixed with the mushroom powder separately. When serving meals I add the meat to a bowl, reheat it in the microwave, take it out and add the pre-prepared dr Harvey’s. I Then top it with the Epakitin, milk thistle, goats milk with probiotics and occasionally benebac plus for a boost.**NOTE: I have since included Epakitin a recommendedchitosan-based phosphate binder to sprinkle on his food. If you read the articles you’ll know why its important. Will update again soon xoxo

Finally a dog food that I can gear to the needs of each of my dogs!
This post is about my positive experience with a new dog food that I tried called Dr. Harveyâs Miracle Dog Food Pre- mix Health Food.My husband and I adopted another rescue greyhound in late January and he was nothing but skin and bones. He broke his ankle on the track and was retired. You may not know this but racing dogs are fed raw meat. Of course when he went to the rescue group he was switched to a dry kibble food which I could tell was not agreeing with him due to his terrible gas, upset stomach at least 3 times a week and loose stools. I know, TMI! So I wanted to put him on a high quality, high protein, good fat, and low carb diet which is very expensive as carbs and meat by-products (road kill, and all other parts of slaughtered animal other than meat, skin, or organs, such as beaks, feet). Gross right? I tried at least 5 different very expensive dry kibble with no luck. He didnât gain weight , he continued to have upset stomachs, and horrible gas! He is 3 years old.In the meantime, my 11 year greyhound was recommended to be put on a prescription diet for kidney care where she needs no more than 14% protein, high Omèga-3 and low phosphorus. Well, I put her on that but of course she wouldnât eat it. And did I mention that I always put either wet dog food or toppers to entice both of them to eat their food. However what ended up happening was that my senior dog wanted the young oneâs food and vice versa defeating the purpose of trying to get them in the best health possible.I then heard from a vet online on how to slow cook protein such as beef, chicken, turkey, pork , or eggs with green beans, sweet potatoes, rice, peas with some fish added about twice a week, for their daily meal. This worked for about 2 weeks but it was very time consuming trying to feed two 75 pound dogs. I would have 2 crockpots going at once. The vet said if you slow cooked the food for 20-24 hours, then they could eat the chicken bones because they would just crumble apart but of course, I didnât trust that and I would find some leg bones and thigh bones which were still hard and splintery so I would have to mush through every thing which was very time consuming. But the worst part was that my young one continued to have upset stomachs and horrible gas and I wasnât sure if this was best for my senior dogâs kidney issues. So back online I went and found a vet nutritionist who has been selling a dehydrated, human grade dog food for over 20 years that you add hot water to rehydrate and add the amount of protein and oil your dog needs. In the pictures below you can see a list of the ingredients. This way I am able to control the amount of protein that my senior dog needs daily, 8-10 oz, and a good omega-3. I was using canned sardines but at 1.99 a can, which would be a little under half the amount of protein she needs, that was getting a little expensive. My young greyhound gets 20-22 oz of protein a day along with some olive oil. I accomplish this by baking 4-5 chicken leg quarters per day which yields me about 2 lbs of protein per day. I recently switched to marine phytoplankton which is plant based pure omega-3 which is grown or farmed in ocean water so itâs a sustainable supply. You only need a fourth of a teaspoon per day per dog (powder form) mixed in their food. This dog food has truly been a miracle food source for them. They both attack their food like they havenât eaten for days. They eat twice a day. My young greyhound has not had a stomachache since starting this food, no gas, no licking of his fur or paws and he seems to feel so good. My senior dog is getting the right nutritional balance for kidney issues and absolutely loves her food. She still plays with her squeaky toys every night after eating. They also do zoomies in the back yard every day to get their 3 minute exercise routine done.If you have dogs with particular nutritional needs or you just want your fur baby to eat a great quality food, I highly recommend this food, and no, I am not being paid for this review. Itâs been a 6 month struggle to find a good dog food that works for both of them. Arlo and Kibbles give it 5 stars!

Great taste, great nutrition
I started feeding this when one of my dogs suffered severe kidney damage as a result of being bitten by a copperhead snake. She now requires a low protein diet. With this food, I control how much protein I add to her diet, and Dr. Harveyâs provides excellent ingredients that includes vegetables and fruits. Her bloodwork scores have improved with every test and she looks and feels great. The food is very palatable, and my dog is eager to eat it. Iâve also fed it to my other dog when she had an upset stomach and she was able to eat it with no problems.

The best base mix thus far – it smells good too, unlike other famous brand’s base mix.

I have been using this food for the past two months on my 2 dogs. One of them has early stage 1 kidney disease, as she is losing protein in her urine. She is on medication, Benezapril, and I am going to wait another month or so and then do another urine test specifically for her protein ration (UPC urine test) and see where we are at. My other dog has no kidney issues, but she is on the same food. They both love it, and I like how easy this food is to prepare. I add specific amounts of cooked protein (chicken thigh or hamburger) and then add the Dr. Harvey’s fish oil. I hope Amazon continues to supply this food, as I live in Canada and ordering directly through Dr. Harvey’s will probably cost more as it has to be shipped to Canada, and then I’ve been told that there will probably be a “customs duty charge” added onto my order. I get worried as every time I order this through Amazon (twice now) as it indicates the item is “in stock”, but then it takes several days until the item is shipped and then I get notice as to when the expected delivery date will be. As another customer mentioned, PLEASE DON’T STOP offering this food as we have little doggies that love it, and most of all need and depend on it 🙂
