How is our high quality food affordable?

Good question. Here’s how: I own the company. I don’t have to answer to venture capitalists, investment bankers, wall street, or anyone else —except my wife. That keeps my marketing budget in check and my overhead low, which allows me to keep the retail prices reasonable. It’s working out pretty well.

Why do we love what we do?

People who have bought Dave’s for their pets have come to trust me with the health and well-being of the creatures they love more than life itself. It doesn’t get better than that!

Customers say

Customers appreciate the wholesome ingredients and high protein content of the pet food. However, some find the consistency dry and pasty, making it difficult for their cats to eat. They also dislike the thickness, smell, and quality. Opinions vary on cat sensitivity.

    Cat hates it
Product is congealed, dry and hard with no juice. Cat hates it. Not sure if it is so close to expiry date (received it 16 days to expiry) that that is why it has the texture of clay, a funny light pink color and looks unappealing. If you have other kidney food options do not buy this. I jad no prescription so my choice was limited.

    Cats eat it!
Finally, a kidney care cat food my cats will eat. The one that needs it is eating it the one that does not need it is not as much of a fan but getting used to it. We are up to 50/50 now meaning 50% of the regular Dave’s (turkey) and 50% of this. I add water and mush it with a fork until very smooth, then warm slightly. I am thankful. Unfortunately I never see any coupons or discounts etc.

Sadly, my cat will not eat it
This food has a very dry consistency and my 19 yr old cat w/kidney failure will not eat it. I even tried adding churu lickable treat to it. Also tried adding chicken broth – No go. Now I’m stuck with the whole case. This is a NON-returnable item so know that you are taking a chance if you buy it. : (

    Cat’s stopped eating this.
Cats loved it at first, now not so much. I got it to replace a prescription urinary diet but cats don’t think I should have. It is low in phosphorus, so that’s why I got it. I wish it wasn’t a pate. The cats like a more chunky style.

Cannot be returned and is falsely advertised as juicy
Old cat will not eat. This is not juicy as advertised on the side of each can!! It’s a hard cake that an old cat cannot eat. I spent some time smashing it down – would have been easier in a food processor – with plenty of warm water. She finally lapped up some. And now I see that there is no way to return it. Waste of money. I should have paid attention to other reviews.

    Better alternative to “prescription” diets
Have all 4 of my cats on this, 2 with KD, 2 without. Much cheaper and, I think better quality than that other junk hills and Purina sells. Really, any company that puts peas in cats food has no clue about cats. It’s a bit dense, but I just add warm water to it to make it softer, which has the added benefit of getting more water into my kitties and making the food stretch farther.Pro tip for anyone having issues getting their cats to eat this, or any other food… They aren’t going to starve themselves. If they know they can hold out a few hours for the stuff they are used to, they will. Both my older, KD kitties, are picky and turned away from it initially, but love it now because, well, they don’t have any other options andits been a year since the switch. They’ll be fine, be strong.

    Customization may be necessary 😽
TL;DR: Worth a try. And as of this writing, the description says, “We’re happy to send you a free can.”First of all, Dave, I am so grateful you make non-Rx kidney diet that’s accessible on Amazon. It’s not inexpensive, but typically on par with or slightly cheaper than other kidney wet food on here (depending on the pricing algorithms that day).Though my sweet senior kitty sometimes likes Dave’s Restricted Phosphorus Diet, she doesn’t always love it. But I’m willing to put in work for the reasons mentioned above! It’s pâté style — which is great — but pretty dry for wet food. To make it softer and stinkier, I zap a chonk in the microwave and mix in a little warm water before serving. Sometimes I add another low-phosphorus cat food (e.g., Tiki Cat Silver, Weruva Wx Phos Focused — available on Amazon), or if I get frustrated, a little regular cat food or Gerber plain meat baby food (also on Amazon). I’ve even bought a $10 mini whisk milk frother on here to make it all smooth, palatable, possible. So before you give up on Dave’s or any kidney diet, I urge you to try warming it, adding a little water, mixing it with other foods, literally blending it, maybe even coming back to it another day in hopes your kitty forgot about it.I know it’s frustrating when they don’t eat, and you’ve spent so much trying. But you are a good human, and you got this! 💪

nearly a wet food, just add a ton of water
this stuff sucks. My cat can’t talk, so I am interpreting. This food is barely moist and the only way my cat will eat 1/2 of the quarter can that we give her, is to load it up and spray copious amounts of H2O on it. Even the first saving after the can is first opened , she’s not too keen on . Gave it away to the shelter…. the food , not the cat.
