Help for dog with degenerative myelopathy
My dog is in the early stages of DM and drags her rear paws when she walks, causing the nails to wear down to the quick. If any of you out there have DM dogs you know you have plenty to worry about already so taking one worry off your plate makes a big difference. These nail caps work great to protect her back claws from excessive wear. The caps last about 1-2 weeks right now, depending on how much walking she does on concrete/asphalt. Once there’s enough wear to form a hole in them they come off on their own about a day later. The glue is a little tricky because it’s hard to see and easy to get too much. Twice now I’ve managed to get glue on her fur which has been not fun. I highly recommend erring on the side of less glue as it’s far easier to put another cap on than it is to deal with having gotten glue everywhere. We cut down the cap so it only covers about half the nail and is well away from the nail bed. Try the caps on first dry to make sure they fit correctly before putting the glue in – the glue is lubricating so know they will slide on faster once you’ve added it. Trimming the hair around their nail bed first also makes things a lot easier.

    poor customer service
Our 12 yr old lab has issues with proprioception, and slides a bit on the hard floors and scuffs her nails down on walks, so we thought we would try this product to give her better traction and to protect her nails somewhat. So, first, what I dislike most about this product. The kit supplies you with 40 nail caps and two tiny tubes of adhesive. We have used 11 caps—the first set and three to replace those that fell off/wore down. We are very careful to apply the recommended (1/3 cap) to the nails and have had no issues with spillage or overflow of the glue. However, after using the 11 caps one of the two tubes ran dry. We contacted the seller to let them know that we would not have enough glue to cover all 40 caps. This is the reply we got:”Please fill caps only 1/3 of the way full, this prevents accidental overflow which can come in contact with the dog’s skin and also provide the best possible seal.We have tested proper fills with XXL caps numerous times (and I use XXLs with my GSD) and one tube per 20 is definitely sufficient”.I had to chuckle—perhaps they are reticent to send out a couple of extra tubes bc of the cost, but it was pretty obvious their attitude is “hey this is on you, you used too much, either go figure out how to get more adhesive on your own or chuck the caps you can’t use bc you’re out of glue but *we* don’t have issues so it’s definitely *you*”.Not the best way to win customer loyalty so, no, I won’t be using this co. again. Life’s too short and full of other options. But, on to the nails themselves. These are the challenges you might face:If your dog is taking walks of any length (our pup can’t go more than 1/2 a mile or so anymore bc of her spine) these *will* wear down. They will split and crack and *if* you are lucky fall off on their own, or, you will have to remove them, and they are not that easy to remove (I use suture scissors and a fine blade–fortunately, pup is very cooperative). Vendor instructions simply say “they will fall off on their own after several weeks”. I am reading some reviewers suggesting acetone, I might go buy some and try that next time. The other issue you will encounter is that this prevents your dog’s nails from wearing down naturally, so you will need to keep pup’s nails evenly trimmed as you replace the nail caps. There are other products that are more like “rings” that go around the nails that might give you the traction while allowing the nails to wear down more naturally. I might try that next since I won’t be using this company again. Glue is cheap and it won’t be hard for me to get more, but the amount they sent me was *definitely INsufficient* and they obviously don’t accept any accountability for that. Fail.

    Best pet nail invention ever!!!
This is the best idea EVER & this kit is AMAZING! I was super skeptical about sizing, fit, application, performance and durability but let me tell you I have been impressed in ALL AREAS!!! I will say the liquid adhesive that comes with some kits is NOT user friendly in my opinion, it was a nightmare from the applicator to the consistency BUT I contacted the company and they sent me 2 tubes of their gel adhesive right away for free and WOW what a difference! The tubes are much more easy to use and the gel is a bit thicker and easier to control. I have a small mixed breed puppy (mini schnauzer/shih-tzu/terrier) approx 20lbs with slightly larger nails than you’d expect for his size and I went with a large…they seemed a little too narrow to fit all the way on so I clipped a tiny bit off the opening and that works! So they don’t cover the ENTIRE nail but more than halfway down which is fine, it doesn’t need to b all the way to his paw, in fact I think u want some space so there is less chance of contact with skin/hair and as long as the sharp ends are covered and it’s at least more than just the tips covered you’re good. Anyway, he is super squirmy puppy so I was very unsure how this would go but I found doing it in stages helped tremendously so first I clipped his nails and gave him a break. Then I got each cap ready and had my son feeding him a chew treat as I applied…I only did his front 2 paws bc we were only concerned with him scratching us when he jumps up so back paws are unnecessary which makes it MUCH EASIER. I made sure to use only small amount (1/3 of cap full) of adhesive as instructed which was right on the spot accurate and slid them on and pinched them for few seconds before moving on. We then kept him lying down eating a chew for 5 min after all were applied just to make sure they were set and he wasn’t going to bite at them or anything and he was fine. He did not seem bothered in the least, paid no attention to them! Wow what a difference! No more painful nails on our thighs when he lies on us or jumps up for attention…no more snagging our clothes or the rug or his doggy bed, etc. It is awesome! They have been on 6 weeks and only 2 have fallen off, just in the last week and I just replaced those 2 after clipping them today and I inspected the others and they are fine! I’m seriously impressed! Now he does not spend much time on concrete/pavement at all and he’s not outside for hours – only 10-15min at a time several times a day for potty and some laps around in the grass …he is still training as he is a puppy so he’s limited right now due to trying to eat bugs and everything he can and learning his leash manners…so I can only speak to the durability of mostly grass, wooden deck, and inside carpet and tile BUT he is a spazz and is NOT gentle lol so I would say more than 4-5 week durability is PHENOMENAL! I mean I wouldn’t expect them to last much longer at all! Not only are they a great product, but the company is fantastic to deal with so I highly recommend and I am a customer for life! We will be investing in these from now on! I wish they would switch all kits over to the gel adhesive tho that is my only feedback.

These run small, my 10 lb dog needed large size. I used just a few drops of glue which held just fine. When it came time to remove I used a small pair of cuticle scissors cutting along the length, opening them up and then peeling them off. I used the recommended method of trimming the tip and massaging to get them off but it didn’t work.

This product was good until its time to remove it… When one came off after over a month i noticed how much his nails had grown.. My dogs nails have grown so long but the plastic caps are still very well glued.. 1/3 of the nail is wayy too much glue. I cant believe how damaged and long my dogs nails are..i started to try to remove the rest but no luck and im afraid to hurt him… I would not recommend this product unless maybe you use less glue. They worked good to protect my floors and furniture but now my poor dog has messed up nails. I really need to cut his nails but the things wont come off 🙁

[3-stars, for now]You simply can’t select the size based on your dog’s weight. Example: 40 to 70 lb = XXL, really?- First, you can’t estimate the size of a dog’s claw for such a broad range of weight !- Second, the weight of a dog isn’t well correlated to its claw sizeThey need to add a proper size chart, simply showing the DIMENSIONS of the thing !(Come on!, it isn’t rocket science)The XXL was way too large for my two 50 lb dogs.I measured it’s size:- Base (rectangle): 0.9 cm (H) x 0.3 cm (W)- Length (from top of claw’s base to tip) : 1.8 cmIf people start posting their measurements for other sized, that would help (till the company realizes they need to do it, with a picture).[I’m returning and ordering a smaller size. I’ll update my review once I find the right size and use it, and I’ll post the last size I got. Cheers]UPDATE 1: the Large size was too small for one of my 50 lb dogs. The measurements are:- Base (rectangle): 0.6 cm (H) x 0.4 cm (W) [yes, the width it’s a bit larger than the XXL size)- Length (from top of claw’s base to tip) : 1.5 cm.Now, I need to buy the X-Large for my second dog. I hope it will fit. Will keep you posted.
